After 43 years, Daniel Hernandez was awarded a Silver Star medal for diving through enemy fire to pick up a wounded Marine and carry him to safety in Vietnam. Hernandez was 20 when he served as a machine gunner with a company, which was among the hardest hit during the Vietnam War, loosing 17 men on March 5, 1966. Several hundred veterans, friends and relatives gathered for the ceremony in Hernandez’ honor at the Hollenbeck Youth Center in Los Angeles on October 3, 2009.
